Enzo Maresca says Trevoh Chalobah is delighted to be back and Chelsea and claimed the decision to let him go out on loan at the start of the season was also because of financial factors.
Chalobah’s season-long loan at Crystal Palace was cut short this week, with the 25-year-old Cobham graduate returning to the club.
He was allowed to leave at the start of the season with competition for places high in defence but following injuries to Wesley Fofana and Benoit Badiashile, Maresca needed reinforcements in that area.
“The process is quite an easy process in terms of we have a few injuries so we were looking for solutions,” Maresca explained.
“We thought probably the best solution was to call back Trev – first of all because we know him very well and second because we are sure he can help us, so we decided for that solution.
“He knows the house (training ground) better than me! First of all he was very happy. I can see his face, I had a chat with him a few days ago and I had a chat with him this morning, and you can see in his eyes he is really happy and we are happy he’s here.”
Maresca also clarified that the reason behind Chalobah’s temporary departure included a financial aspect to it.
He continued: “The reason why he left at the beginning of the season, we all knew it was more because of the problems like financial fair play, these kind of things. It was not only a technical decision.
“The reason why he’s here is because we are sure he can help us now.
“I’m not sure but I think Trev trained with us until we flew to the USA. I’m not sure so he trained with us and then when we went to the USA, he was here [at Cobham] training and we were there. So he trained with us.
“As I said, I had a chat with Trev two days ago and had a chat this morning. He was doing well there and also that is the reason why we called him back.”
Chalobah will likely go straight into the squad to face Wolves on Monday, with four players including Cole Palmer doubts for the clash.
