The eight-time winners are safely through to the FA Cup fourth round
Chelsea went into the game on a four-match winless run, but facing a struggling League Two side meant they were heavy favourites to get back on track.
Boosted by the returns of Reece James and Romeo Lavia after injury, Enzo Maresca stuck to his policy of rotating for the cup competitions as he handed starts to the likes of Joao Felix, Renato Veiga and Christopher Nkunku.
The latter had the best chance of the first-half when the Blues were awarded a penalty after Morecambe skipper Yann Songo’o handled Felix’s cross. Despite the protests, the decision stood and that would have been the case even if VAR was in operation.
With that said, had VAR been in use then the spot-kick would have been retaken as Morecambe goalkeeper Harry Burgoyne was off his line prior to making an excellent stop to deny Nkunku.
Burgoyne continued to thwart the Blues but his resistance was finally broken shortly before half-time as he could do nothing about Tosin Adarabioyo’s goal.
The Chelsea defender was afforded too much space and his speculative effort took a deflection off Morecambe's Callum Jones on its way into the net and just like that the visitors’ resistance was broken.
The lead was doubled early in the second half as Nkunku atoned for his penalty miss by slamming the ball home from close range after another good Burgoyne save.
As the League Two side tired, the Premier League giants’ quality shone through. Adarabioyo netted his second of the afternoon with a stunning whipped effort into the top corner before Felix took centre stage with a quickfire double of his own.
The Portuguese’s second certainly was a contender for goal of the afternoon as Chelsea cruised to victory to seal a place in tomorrow’s FA Cup fourth round draw.
