Chelsea have “concrete interest” in 20 year old who could be available for €50m

Chelsea’s summer plans are gradually coming into focus.
It’s clear that their priority is signing a striker, and a goalkeeper and a central defender are also on the list. But left winger is clearly an area they’re targeting, and the more we hear the more likely it sounds that Jamie Gittens is top of their list.
We’ve been hearing about it for months, but today’s update from well connected German transfer insider Florian Plettenberg brings the sort of level of detail which convinces you that there’s something real here.
Plettenberg claims that Chelsea are showing “concrete interest” in the Borussia Dortmund winger, who has really emerged as a rising star this season.
He says that the Blues are speaking with Gittens’ management to try and lay the groundwork for a deal, with an offer to double his annual salary from €3m to €6m or more out there.
As for a transfer fee: Dortmund would reportedly ask for around €50m to €60m. That number just keeps coming down, with a €100m original price now long forgotten.
Florian Plettenberg’s Tweet about Jamie Gittens.
Even at €50m Gittens won’t be coming cheap – but he’s a really good player at a good age, hungry with a lot to prove. He’s not the finished product though – and the question is if he has a higher ceiling than the likes of Noni Madueke and Pedro Neto.
If he’s not better now and doesn’t have the potential to become better than what we have, it obviously makes no sense to sign him.
Certainly our scouts have their work cut out trying to get a read on Gittens in these final weeks of the season before we decide whether to make him our next big investment in the front line.
