Chelsea have opened talks to sign Borussia Dortmund winger Jamie Gittens, according to Sky Germany.
The Blues are looking to strengthen Enzo Maresca’s squad with a new striker, a centre-back, and a right-footed left winger this summer.
They’re making significant strides in getting those positions sorted out even before the transfer window opens.
Chelsea are currently in talks to sign Bournemouth gem Dean Huijsen. While that’s being sorted out, they’re also making moves to bring Gittens back to the Premier League.
Gittens started the season firing on all cylinders, but his momentum waned as the campaign wore on.
At the moment, he has lost his place in new manager Niko Kovac’s team and is keen to jump ship, now more than ever.
The 20-year-old has racked up 12 goals and five assists in 44 games across all competitions this season.
He’s struggling for playing time, and his lack of minutes has left him unsettled at Signal Iduna Park, adding to his desire to leave the club.
Gittens has spent five years in the iconic black and yellow colours of Dortmund, but he’s now open to taking the next step in his career.
The English winger is highly coveted, but Chelsea are believed to be in pole position to bring him back to England.
The Blues are actively in discussions with Gittens’s representatives and are reportedly ready to offer him a significant pay increase.
They’re proposing an annual salary worth around €6-7 million (£5.1-£5.9m), which will double his currently salary at Dortmund.
The West London club believe a player of his calibre deserves a prominent platform in the Premier League. They also see him as a long-term asset with immense potential.
Chelsea’s move for Gittens aligns with their strategy of investing in young talents with a high ceiling.
Dortmund are not actively pushing for a sale, but they’d be ready to open talks if they receive a bid of around €50-60m (£42.6-£51m).
