CM: Theo Hernandez approaching a crossroads – why a bridge deal is possible | OneFootball

With each passing week and month we get closer to Theo Hernandez’s contract expiring, and at present a renewal is not imminent.

Calciomercato.com speak about a ‘stalemate that is not convenient’ for either the player or the club. Milan and Theo are heading towards 2025, when the defender will have less than 18 months left on his contract.

At the moment the renewal talks are still at a standstill. Theo’s agent Manuel Garcìa Quilon has apparently reiterated the fact that the last contacts with Milan date back several months ago, but when talks do resume it is possible the compromise could be found at €7m net per season.

That is the amount Rafael Leao gets and he is the number one earner in the squad. The failure to renew Theo would be a problem for Milan, whose strategy could include an extension of a couple of years (2028) at a higher figure than the current one (€4.5m) as a bridge deal.

The benefits of this would be that it would buy time to negotiate a longer extension while also providing some leverage in negotiations with other clubs that might come in, even if the Frenchman is happy and has no plans to leave for free.

Nonetheless, there are a few teams around Europe that could knock on Milan’s door. Bayern Munich – who will lose Alphonso Davies on a free transfer – are one of them, as are Manchester City. Real Madrid can’t be forgotten either, even if they seem close to signing Davies.

Milan would like to avoid dragging out the negotiations and the two parties will have to try to meet halfway, especially given that Theo is likely to become the full-time captain with Davide Calabria’s deal expiring.
