Move over Andrew Redmayne, Jordan Farr would like word.
After entering in the 118th minute of what was already a classic U.S. Open Cup tie, Farr saved four out of five penalties to help D.C. United book its place in the quarterfinals following a captivating 3-3 draw against visiting Charlotte FC on Wednesday night.
In his first career appearance for an MLS club, Farr denied Adilson Malanda, Pep Biel, Iuri Tavares and Liel Abada over five Charlotte attempts in a remarkable display of clutch goalkeeping.
Abada was the last to go, with Farr diving to his right to push out his bid to try and send the tiebreak to extra penalties. Instead, it finished 2-1 in the hosts' favor.
"We also knew that if we got into this type of situation that he’s excellent, and he has a track record of that," explained D.C. manager Troy Lesesne. "It’s not a surprise to us, but it really is … an unbelievable performance. To save four out of five is truly special."
The Black-and-Red needed all of them, as Farr's counterpart David Bingham was nearly as good with three stops of his own to force the tiebreak the full 10 kicks.
"I just wanted to help the team," said Farr, who previously spent six seasons across three different USL Championship clubs before moving to MLS this offseason. "I love these guys. I love the coaching staff. ... The fact that I get to help the team was just my main thing."
Farr's heroics were just the exclamation point on a wonderful cup tie from the neutral's point of view, despite a sparse crowd amid persistent rain and wind that forced postponement of the Washington Nationals' baseball game just up the block.
United States international Patrick Agyemang and New Zealand center-back Bill Tuiloma scored three minutes apart early in the second half to flip an early deficit to a 2-1 advantage for the visitors, but Garrison Tubbs pulled D.C. level in the 85th minute to force extra time.
The sides traded goals again in the first 15 minutes of the half-hour extra session, with Tyger Smalls again giving Charlotte FC the lead and then Jackson Hopkins taking it back for D.C.
While Farr will be a new name to MLS fans, he has a little history with penalty tiebreakers from his lengthy USL Championship career.
He's now 2-1 all-time in senior competitions in games decided on penalties. In last year's Eastern Conference quarterfinals for the Tampa Bay Rowdies, Farr kept three of Detroit City's four takers off the board to allow his team to progress.
That level of acumen -- reminiscent of Redmayne's famous heroics as a late substitute to help the Australia national team book a place at the 2022 FIFA World Cup -- made the substitution decision simple for Lesesne, and one that was easier for starting goalkeeper Kim Joon-Hong to understand.
