Dean Henderson has wished former club Sheffield United well ahead of their crucial fixture against Leeds United tonight.
Former Sheffield United goalkeeper Dean Henderson has wished the club well ahead of their massive game against Leeds United tonight.
The 27-year-old is currently number one at Crystal Palace, but he has already turned out for many clubs in his career, which included a hugely successful period with the Blades.
Henderson was in goal as Chris Wilder’s side won promotion from the Championship in 2019, and he returned for a second season as they defied the odds to secure a top-half finish in the Premier League.
So, they are a club close to his heart, and it appears Henderson still keeps an eye on all things Sheffield United, as he reacted to a social media post from the club ahead of Leeds’ visit with a comment that said ‘let’s go’ as well as a love heart emoji.
Of course, this is a fixture that means a lot anyway, given the two clubs are Yorkshire rivals, but it has had added significance in recent years as both have been competing for promotion.
That was the case during Henderson’s time at Bramall Lane, with Sheffield United seeing off Marcelo Bielsa’s side to secure a top two finish, so he will be well aware of the rivalry.
The twice-capped England international will have had mixed memories of games against Leeds that season though, as he made a mistake when the Blades were beaten at home. But, he did keep a clean sheet as Sheffield United won 1-0 at Elland Road thanks to a Chris Basham goal in what was a vital victory in the promotion race.
Wilder will no doubt be leaning on his past experiences as his side try to pick up what would be a massive three points later on.
Whilst it was a positive for the Blades that Sunderland slipped up this weekend, Burnley recorded another victory, so it’s very tight at the top.
Plus, if the hosts can win, they will once again have Leeds looking over their shoulders as it appears that three teams will be battling for two places.
Most would agree that Leeds have been the standout team this season in terms of performances, so it will be a real test for Sheffield United, but they will fancy their chances on their own patch against anyone at this level.
