A 4-2 defeat at the hands of Holstein Kiel on Tuesday evening marked Borussia Dortmund’s ninth of the campaign, just two less than in the entirety of last season and just one less than they suffered during the 2022/23 campaign.
It is no secret that this has been a difficult first half of the season for Die Schwarzgelben, and there are a number of reasons for that.
BvB have undeniably suffered a number of unfortunate injuries, but this has not been helped by a poor summer transfer window, where ultimately not enough depth was brought into the club.
As for the players that arrived in the summer, the majority of them have yet to hit the ground running, and only Serhou Guirassy can really hold his head up high.
However, another glaring issue has been Nuri Şahin, and for every positive performance Dortmund have put in under the young head coach, there have been even more embarrassing ones.
This has, therefore, seen Şahin’s future at the Westfalenstadion called into question, with reports recently linking former Manchester United head coach Erik Ten Hag to the club.
While it appears as though Şahin will at least be in charge for Dortmund’s clash against Eintracht Frankfurt on Friday, speaking to Sky Germany after the loss in Kiel, the 36-year-old admitted that he can understand why his future is being speculated about:
“Anyone who is eight points behind the Champions League places cannot talk about the Champions League. Our reality is different. Because I am the coach, I bear complete responsibility.”
“It is completely clear that the coach is also being discussed. I cannot excuse myself from that. The last person I am thinking of now is myself. I am speechless; I am stunned at how we can put in such a performance. I don’t care at all about me; I care about Borussia Dortmund, about the people who mean well for this club, and that I, as the person in charge, have not yet managed to get this team to play as they would like.”
When asked whether he can turn the ship around at Die Schwarzgelben, Şahin stated:
“I have the strength; that’s not the point. Believe me, I’m strong enough. I’ve already experienced so much in my life. It’s completely clear that it affects me, that I’m sad, that I’m emotional.”
“I owe almost everything in my life to this club. I know it sounds melancholy, but I’m strong. You don’t have to worry about that, but I know how football works. Football is a results sport. I’m measured by results because I bear complete responsibility. There’s nothing to add.”
Dortmund’s director of sport, Lars Ricken, has already confirmed that Şahin will travel to Frankfurt with the squad, but should Die Adler triumph, then a dismissal may be just around the corner.
