There’s something about a Champions League semi-final penalty that makes even the calmest players crumble.
On Tuesday night at Parc des Princes, it was Vitinha’s turn to feel the heat — and he blinked.
With PSG 2-0 up on aggregate and just over 20 minutes to go, the Portuguese midfielder stepped up with a chance to kill the tie.
But his slow, stuttered run-up did nothing to put off David Raya, who guessed right, got down sharply, and pulled off a brilliant save to keep Arsenal clinging on.
Vitinha now finds himself in a not-so-glamorous club of players who’ve missed penalties at this stage of the Champions League. And it’s not just any list - Luís Figo, Juan Román Riquelme, Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, Thomas Müller, Fernando Torres... now Vitinha joins them.
For a brief moment, Raya’s stop gave Arsenal a glimmer of hope. But PSG held their nerve, saw out the rest of the match, and booked their place in the final in Munich, where they’ll take on Inter Milan.
