FC Barcelona resumed their campaign after the international break with yet another dominant performance, continuing their impressive scoring form.

Their latest match against Sevilla ended with a comprehensive 5-1 victory, marking the third time this season that they scored five or more goals.

This followed an earlier 5-1 triumph over Villarreal, a commanding 5-0 win against Young Boys, and a 7-0 demolition of Valladolid.

These results clearly show that Barcelona are on a roll, and Hansi Flick, the manager, had every reason to be pleased.

“It was important to come back with a win after the break. We started a very complicated week well, but we are in a very good moment. Even so, we have to keep improving things,” said the manager after the match.

Flick’s praise

Barcelona were quick to establish control, effectively deciding the outcome of the game by half-time. They continued to push forward, showing no signs of letting up despite their commanding lead.

“I think we had a very good first half. We went little by little and found spaces little by little.”

Flick’s focus on maintaining intensity throughout the match was evident as his team did not sit back after scoring three goals.

The message was clear: a solid first half is just the beginning, and keeping the pressure on is essential to prevent opponents from finding opportunities.

“After scoring three goals you feel better, but you have to keep going and not fall behind, because otherwise you give your opponent options.”

One of the highlights of the match was the return of Gavi, who had been sidelined for over 11 months. His performance was nothing short of remarkable. Not only did his return energise the team, but his presence also brought a special atmosphere to the stadium.

“Gavi’s return has been fantastic. The way he livened up the stadium has also been spectacular. The aim was for him to return today and that’s what happened.

Gavi’s trademark intensity was on full display, providing a boost that the entire team could feel. Flick acknowledged the young midfielder’s impact, noting how his energy and determination set a positive tone, even if it sometimes needs a bit of moderation.

“We’re all happy, you can feel it. The intensity he showed when he came on has been very positive. Sometimes it’s good to be calmer, but that’s not his style,” he said.

However, it wasn’t all smooth sailing for Barcelona. Flick faced a pre-match setback with the unexpected absence of Eric due to a late decision and Frenkie de Jong also being ruled out due to minor discomfort.

“We also thought that Frenkie could have started today, but he told us that he was having discomfort and that was why he was not an option to start today.”

Although de Jong could have played through it, the decision was made to rest him, allowing Gavi to step up. Flick was quick to point out that Frenkie’s issue wasn’t serious and that he would be ready for future matches.

“[Eric] He has no injury or anything, but we have decided to take Gavi on instead of him. Frenkie could have played today despite the discomfort, just as he will be able to do so on Wednesday.”

Robert Lewandowski added to his goal tally with a brace, while Harry Kane netted a hat-trick in a match that Flick insisted was more about team performance than individual duels.

For Flick, the team’s unity and collective effort matter more than any personal accolades, and it’s this cohesion that he believes will drive Barcelona forward this season.

“It’s not a battle of players, but of teams. For me it’s very important that Robert scored, but it’s even more important that he is united with the other players and that they are feeling so well,” he added.

Pau Cubarsi also earned praise for his defensive intelligence. His ability to handle one-on-one situations without the ball was a key asset in keeping the Sevilla attack at bay.

“Pau is very intelligent and adapts very well to his opponent. He is very good in one-on-one situations, even without the ball.”

Additionally, Ansu Fati’s inclusion in the match was another positive note. After recovering from a long injury spell, his performance showed that he is gradually returning to his best form, with more improvement expected as he gains match fitness.

“For Ansu, it is important to be able to play. After being injured for a long time, he has not had a good time. It is good that he has been able to play. He will improve.”

Lastly, Pablo Torre’s versatility was noted, with the young talent being able to play both in his usual position and as a forward. “He can also play as a 7 and can play in Lamine’s position,” concluded the manager.
