Florian Wirtz will be absent from the Bayer Leverkusen team for several weeks following an ankle injury sustained against Werder Bremen last weekend, the club has confirmed.
As reported by GGFN last weekend, Wirtz was seen leaving the stadium on crutches, and he headed to the hospital for an MRI scan.
The fear was that Wirtz had sustained a potential syndesmosis tear, which would have ruled him out for the rest of the season.
However, the injury isn’t as bad as first feared, but the attacking midfielder will be absent for several weeks, including the home leg of Bayer Leverkusen’s Last 16 Champions League tie against Bayern Munich.
Sporting director Simon Rolfes explained: “Florian’s absence naturally affects us at this stage of the season, but we will make up for it with a strong team. We know Florian and know that he will be back as soon as possible. Everyone will support him. We assume that he will be fit again for the final stretch of the season.”
Depending on how Wirtz gets on with his rehabilitation, he could also miss the club’s DFB Pokal semi-final against Arminia Bielefeld on April 1st.
