The Merseyside Derby delivered its trademark drama, intensity, and controversy as Liverpool were held to a 2-2 draw by Everton at Goodison Park. In a game that tested the nerve of players, fans, and even the officials, the Reds dropped crucial points in their pursuit of the Premier League title. Gags Tandon and Jack McIndoe provided insightful, unfiltered reactions on The Gags Tandon Show for Anfield Index, capturing the essence of the contest and its aftermath.
“It’s disappointing, to say the least. It’s a nightmare in the end,” Gags Tandon said, reflecting the collective mood of Liverpool supporters. Liverpool, who led until the dying moments, were pegged back by a last-minute equaliser from James Tarkowski. Tandon summed up the frustration: “When you get yourself in a position to win, it becomes like you’ve dropped two points.”
Everton’s late goal, while celebrated like a cup final victory by the home crowd, came amid controversy. Jack McIndoe was equally disheartened: “We got sucked into their wormhole of playing absolute long balls… It’s so frustrating when you play a team of that quality, that awful.” The tactical disruption from Everton’s direct play proved a difficult challenge for Arne Slot’s men, who struggled to control the game in the final stages.
The defensive frailties that haunted Liverpool throughout the match did not escape Tandon’s analysis. “Virg had his worst performance in years… the ball bouncing past him, clearances going awry.” McIndoe agreed, adding: “Van Dijk turned into prime Lovren tonight.” The high defensive line, a hallmark of Liverpool’s game, was exploited as Everton repeatedly launched long balls to bypass the midfield.
Liverpool’s lack of a commanding presence in midfield was evident. “We’re really missing a Fabinho-type DM to support Ibu and Virg,” Tandon noted. The Reds’ inability to handle Everton’s aerial threat ultimately cost them the win, leaving fans frustrated with the lack of in-game adaptability.

While Liverpool’s performance was below par, the officiating became a major talking point. “The ref was absolutely abysmal… an absolute disgrace,” Tandon declared, expressing his disbelief at some of the decisions. One contentious moment saw Mohamed Salah pulled down in the corner without punishment. “Some of the stuff was just stupid,” Tandon said. “Bradley was getting booked for nothing while they were diving like it was a competition.”
The decisions by referee Michael Oliver sparked a wider debate about Premier League officiating. Tandon didn’t hold back: “The Premier League is a corrupt organisation. They want drama. They don’t want Liverpool running away with the league.” Such strong words reflect the deep frustration that controversial refereeing decisions have caused among Liverpool fans this season.
Despite the disappointment, both Tandon and McIndoe found some positives to cling to. “We’re still seven points clear,” Tandon reminded listeners. “It just feels bad because this was a freebie for us. We could have gone nine points clear.” McIndoe echoed the sentiment, saying, “Over a 38-game season, the best team wins. One derby result won’t change that.”
Liverpool now turn their attention to Wolves. With tough fixtures against Aston Villa and Manchester City on the horizon, the Reds must learn from their mistakes. “We just need to stop playing into the opposition’s hands with flicks and tricks,” Tandon advised. “We need to keep it simple and control the game.”
The Merseyside Derby once again delivered on drama, frustration, and controversy. Liverpool may feel aggrieved, but the challenge now lies in ensuring that these dropped points do not derail their title charge.
