Arsenal boss Renee Slegers was surprised to see Gareth Taylor sacked from Manchester City earlier this week, making him the third Women’s Super League manager to depart in two weeks.

Of the 12 WSL clubs, five have parted ways with their manager since the start of the season, with Liverpool, Crystal Palace and Man City all in the last two weeks.

Slegers, who took over at Arsenal after Jonas Eidevall’s departure in October, had previously described the sackings of managers as ‘brutal’ and wished Taylor all the best.

“I think they’ve had some good results lately,” Slegers said. “Obviously they have some players away with injuries as well so I wasn’t expecting it, but that’s only from the outside.

“I don’t know what’s happening on the inside, but obviously it’s always sad to see people go because I know how hard work it is.

“I just want to say I wish Gareth all the best in the future.”

Taylor’s final match in charge was a 2-0 FA Cup victory over Aston Villa, progressing City to the semi-finals of the tournament.

Arsenal, meanwhile, lost out on a place in the semis following defeat to Liverpool, who sit sixth in the WSL table, in Amber Whiteley’s second match as interim manager following Matt Beard’s departure.

On the defeat, Slegers said: “It’s very disappointing. Not what we wanted and not the performance we wanted at all.

“I think this one was hard on us because we [were eliminated from the] FA Cup. The players were very angry and disappointed. They wanted more.

“So I see that in a positive way because I think  those emotions and that frustration can lead to  motivation.

“We can’t impact that anymore, it’s behind us, so now we want to look forward. We are still active in Champions League as well, so we have a big month coming up.

“I think from the inside and the process we’re in, [success] will be building a winning culture. The actions and behaviors we do day to day.

“But of course, a successful season for the club will be prizes at the end of the season.”
