Atalanta coach Gian Piero Gasperini argued with Sky Sport Italia pundit Giancarlo Marocchi, who had claimed that La Dea’s downfall began when the coach said he’d not extend his contract: ‘It’s nonsense.’

Gasperini argued with former Juventus and Bologna midfielder Marocchi, now working as a Sky Sport Italia pundit, after a 1-0 home defeat against Lazio.

Atalanta have now lost three consecutive league matches, going from potential title contenders to seeing their Champions League spot under threat.

They are also without a home victory in Serie A since December 2022.

Gasperini said a few weeks ago that he would not extend his Atalanta contract beyond 2026 and even left the door open for a summer exit.

Marocchi argued tonight that the Atalanta downfall began after Gasperini’s claims about his future, but the Italian tactician strongly disagreed.

“This is nonsense,” Gasp replied via Corriere dello Sport.

“You guys focus too much on results, and after those words, we won 5-0 against Empoli and 4-0 against Juventus.”

Marocchi, however, hit back: “We don’t look at the results here, and it’s clear that the victory over Juventus was just an illusion.

Gasp had the last word in the dispute and concluded by saying, “This is just an excuse that distracts from what really matters—the pitch and the game of football.”

Atalanta sit third in the Serie A table, but are now involved in the race for a Champions League spot with five other clubs.
