With the return to the 1:1 status, there is now an increased likelihood of new additions and contract renewals to this FC Barcelona squad. However, such operations seemed highly unlikely to occur during the ongoing January transfer window.

In that context, the Catalan club’s sporting department is reportedly focusing mainly on contract renewals of several of their players who were running out of contract in the next one or two years.

In this regard, there have been some notable developments taking place. A recent report revealed that Ronald Araujo has already signed his new contract with Barcelona today, on Thursday, which is inarguably a significant achievement for Deco’s team.

However, this is not the only breakthrough made by the Catalans today, as Mundo Deportivo reports that another player, Gerard Martín, has also signed his renewal with Barcelona till 2028.

The 22-year-old full-back’s contract was going to expire this summer, but he had already arrived at an agreement for a renewal with the Blaugrana club for some time now.

But today, he has officially signed this new contract. He did so at the Catalan club’s offices and was accompanied at this event by his parents, grandparents, and some friends.

These visitors and Martín were received by the Director of Youth Football Jose Ramon Alexcano and the Director of Youth Football Joan Soler.

Although the defender still has a youth team card, he has regularly been a first-team player this season. Having earned Hansi Flick’s full trust, he has already made 18 appearances under the German coach, 11 in La Liga, 4 in the UEFA Champions League, 2 in Copa del Rey, and 1 in the Super Cup. He has accumulated 2 assists in these games.

Last season, he was an undisputed starter for Rafa Marquez’s Barcelona Atletic, after having joined from Cornella back in 2023. Thus, he has been growing at a significant pace in the last few months, and hopefully, will continue to do so with this new contract under his belt.
