Eddie Howe says that it wasn’t his decision to sell Lloyd Kelly to Juventus, but Newcastle United were had to complete the transfer for financial reasons.
The defender joined the Old Lady on loan with a £20 million obligation to buy this week, just six months after signing for the Magpies as a free agent.
Miguel Almiron also left St James’ Park in the January transfer window, while no new signings were made as the club sought to avoid breaching the Premier League‘s Profit and Sustainability Rules.
“It wasn’t necessarily my decision to let him leave,” Howe confirmed. “It was very reluctant from our side. Lloyd is a player who had just recently signed, we believed in him and his qualities.
“It’s slightly frustrating for him he hadn’t played more, but that was in part due to the other players around him.
“We’ve been aware in this window of managing PSR and making decisions which benefit us in the long-term, and this is one of those.
“Lloyd leaves with our best wishes, he’s got an exemplary attitude, I’m sure he’ll do well in Italy and it’s an exciting challenge for him.”
Howe is hoping for a “brighter future” following the latest outgoings, but would not confirm if Newcastle would splash the cash in the summer transfer window.
“I’ve said many times, it’s a difficult thing to give definitive clear answers,” he said.
“That’s not me being difficult, but the last year, we know we’ve been managing a situation where we had to make decisions we wouldn’t have made from a football perspective.
“But hopefully by being prudent we will be making purely football decisions in the future. I can’t give you a date on when that is, it would be wrong of me to do so.”
Newcastle have recouped almost £100m in player sales across the season, but have only reinvested £45m in the squad, leaving Howe frustrated.
“Was I frustrated yesterday? No,” he said. “That was a long time in the making, the window ended how we expected it to.
“Different emotions for me, overall there’s an element of frustration that we haven’t taken the squad forward in a positive way, that’s everyone’s aim and ambition.
“But not yesterday on the day. It’s more of an overall feeling, we’re keen to take the team forward and progress but we haven’t been able to do that in this window.”
