Birmingham City's potential summer transfer activity has already raised plenty of eyebrows as the club prepares for life back in the Championship.

Last season saw Tom Wagner and Knighthead Capital Management's backing reach a whole new ballgame as Blues invested significantly in a squad which the club believe is capable of making an instant mark on their return to the second-tier.

Chris Davies was able to freshly mould his side throughout, as 17 summer incomings were added to in the winter window in the form of Kieran Dowell and Myung-Jae Lee and Grant Hanley on top of a pre-contract agreement for German centre-back Phil Neumann and the conversion of Taylor Gardner-Hickman's initial loan switch into a permanent move for just £1.5m.

The end result was emphatic as Birmingham blew their 23 divisional counterparts out of the water with a staggering world-record haul of 111 points and 34 wins from 46 games, seeing them finish 19 points clear at the top as Wagner hinted after the shock EFL Trophy final defeat on April 13th that the club could smash last season's club-record fee for Jay Stansfield once again this summer.

As Blues' season came to an end, speculation regarding summer targets began, which included links regarding a stunning reunion with former St Andrew's @ Knighthead Park favourite, Che Adams.

However, whilst those rumours have since been put to bed, FLW's resident Bluenose, Mike Gibbs, believes a striker of the 28-year-old's ilk is exactly who the club should be looking to sign.

The recent report from Birmingham Live outlined that the 33-time international, who is currently on the books of Serie A outfit Torino, still has plenty of admirers in B9 for his previous contributions in a testing time for the club which ended in a then-club-record sale to Southampton for £15m.

Whilst it would have been fantastic for Bluenoses to welcome their former cult hero back in a different set of circumstances altogether, Gibbs isn't overly disappointed as other targets are likely to emerge.

"Am I disappointed with that? I'm not sure I am," he began. "Don't get me wrong, I'd love to have him back.

"He was excellent for us. He really developed into a top Championship player and, I think, the season he left, he scored over 15 goals in an underperforming team.

"So, I think he'd have been a good addition," Gibbs explained.

"But, I guess the reason I'm not disappointed is I've got confidence in the club, the board and Craig Gardner to go and find somebody of equal or better quality anyway," he added.

"I do think he probably should be on our radar because he can do a very, very good job at that level. If he's playing week in, week out, he will score goals in that league."

Adams is currently estimated to be earning the equivalent of £54,582 per week in Turin after leaving Southampton last summer, where he scored 15 goals in 40 games as the Saints regained their top-flight status under Russell Martin, a tally which took his overall Championship numbers to 49 goals in 156 games when taking his previous spell at Blues in to account.

He has accumulated 10 goals and four assists in 36 games for 'Il Toro' this season, proving that he remains a steady performer at elite level, and that, regardless of the fact links of a reunion have been dismissed for the time being, it should excite Bluenoses about what could lie ahead.

It is expected that the club will continue to invest, with the current striking options being Stansfield, Alfie May and Lyndon Dykes, two of whom have previous second-tier experience, whilst May looks to prove himself at the level for the very first time.
