Inter Milan captain Lautaro Martinez will be hoping that taking on his “favourite victims” Cagliari will inspire him to end his Serie A goal drought.
This is highlighted in today’s print edition of Turin-based newspaper Tuttosport, via FCInterNews.
Martinez’s struggles in front of goal have become a real subplot for Inter this season.
Normally so prolific in front of goal, the Argentine does occasionally have stretches where he just isn’t getting on the scoresheet.
And the last few weeks have seen one of Martinez’s most notable goal droughts in an Inter shirt.
The 27-year-old’s last goal for the Nerazzurri came against Venezia at the start of November.
Since then, Martinez has been stuck on just five Serie A goals for the season.
Martinez will be hoping that this evening can be the right opportunity for him to unlock his scoring form.
And as Tuttosport notes, it could be just the right opponent for the Inter captain to face.
Cagliari are the first team that Martinez ever scored against for Inter.
Moreover, the 27-year-old has scored more goals against the Sardinians than against any other team in Serie A.
Martinez has scored ten times against Salernitana. Not too surprising considering he bagged a remarkable four goals against them in one match.
But of the teams currently in Serie A, none have allowed Martinez to score more times than Cagliari.
The Argentine has found the back of the net nine times against the Rossoblu.
Martinez was on the scoresheet the last time Inter travelled to the Unipol Domus. He scored in a 2-0 win.
Meanwhile, Martinez was unavailable in the most recent meeting between the two teams, a 2-2 draw at the San Siro.
