Beppe Bergomi offered his support to Inter Milan wingback Matteo Darmian for conceding a penalty against Fiorentina.

Speaking to Sky Sport Italia via FCInterNews, Bergomi analyzed last night’s controversial clash at the San Siro.

Inter emerged 2-1 winners, courtesy of a second-half header scored by substitute Marko Arnautovic.

However, the first half brimmed with controversy as referee Federico La Penna had a terrible night.

Indeed, he gave the Nerazzurri an unexisting corner kick, which resulted in the opening goal.

Afterward, he awarded Fiorentina a dubious penalty for Darmian’s handball after VAR’s intervention.

Both situations sparked heated debates, with Bergomi questioning the penalty decision.

He argued that Darmian had no way to jump naturally without using his arms for balance.

“Inter did well,” Bergomi started. “In their four defeats this season, they have always reacted by winning. Inzaghi’s attitude is right.

“The team approached the game well, it was important to react with nervous energy.

“They deserved the victory regardless of the refereeing episodes.”

Then, he addressed the penalty awarded against Darmian.

“How can you jump without pushing yourself with your arms?” he added.

“He even has his eyes closed, Kean unbalances him. And the ball would have gone out.

“As a former player, I think that in 90% of these situations, you shouldn’t penalize.”

Furthermore, Bergomi sided with Atalanta coach Gian Piero Gasperini, insisting that VAR has worsened the game.

“Gasperini is right; VAR has made the game worse. Defenders are no longer coordinated when defending.

“They put their hands behind their backs and score own goals, like the one from Parma, because they can’t see the ball and are off balance.”
