Inter Milan boss Simone Inzaghi explained his decision to leave Davide Frattesi on the bench in tonight’s clash against Bologna.
During his pre-match interview with DAZN via FCInterNews, the Scudetto-winning manager took stock of Frattesi’s situation.
Hakan Calhanoglu and Henrikh Mkhitaryan weren’t at Inzaghi’s disposal for this evening’s match against Vincenzo Italiano’s side.
Therefore, some expected Frattesi to start the game against genuine European hopefuls at the San Siro.
However, Inzaghi had other plans.
Kristjan Asllani took Calhanoglu’s place as the deep-lying playmaker, while Piotr Zielinski replaced Mkhitaryan.
As such, Frattesi had to settle for a substitute role again.
Many considered this move the final sign of an immediate break-up between Inter and the 25-year-old.
But Inzaghi offered a perfectly reasonable explanation for giving Zielinski the nod ahead of the Roma-linked midfielder.
“His spirit is excellent, but he’s dealing with some lingering physical issues,” Inzaghi stated.
“However, he’s managing well and moving forward.”
Inzaghi also expects Bologna to give Inter a run for their money.
“Bologna mixes things up, and I’ve faced Vincenzo Italiano many times over the years,” he continued.
“We’re prepared for whatever they bring, but we know the small details will make the difference.
“We’re aware of the challenges this game presents. Bologna is in great form, having only lost to Verona in their last eight matches, and they’ve been performing well for years.
“Despite the coaching change, they’ve maintained excellent performances.
“We’ll need a top-level Inter to overcome this. It’ll be a very physical match, and we’ll need to approach it in the best way possible.”
Meanwhile, Inzaghi addressed the midfield crisis at the San Siro.
“We’ve had some difficulties in midfield, and the defensive issues from December have partly eased,” he added.
“Now we’re facing some problems in the middle of the park. Frattesi isn’t at 100%, but he’s shown great willingness.
“The three players who featured against Venezia will play again, and we’ll aim for a strong performance.”
