Simone Inzaghi ‘could not have asked for more’ from Inter in their 2-0 victory over Atalanta, but admits Marcus Thuram is in doubt for the Final against Juventus or Milan.
The Nerazzurri are trying to become the first team ever to win the Supercoppa Italiana for four consecutive campaigns.
They achieved the first part of the task, sweeping Atalanta aside 2-0 in this evening’s semi-final thanks to the brace from Denzel Dumfries.
“The lads were excellent, it was never in doubt against a team of great quality. We wanted this Final, we made the first step and now know the most important one still has to be made, but to create this many chances against Atalanta is honestly something to be proud of,” Inzaghi told Sport Mediaset.
There could’ve been more goals, as Marco Carnesecchi made a series of remarkable saves on Lautaro Martinez, while at the other end Ederson’s goal was ruled offside.
“The goalkeeper made saves on Mkhitaryan and Dimarco too, when we didn’t get the third goal, it left the possibility of Atalanta coming back, but I could not have asked for much more from my lads.
“Our only fault is not killing off the game earlier, but I really cannot complain against quality opposition. I am very satisfied, especially with all these journeys and a packed fixture list, yet the lads showed determination, concentration and focus. We have gone beyond all expectations this season.”

This was the fifth consecutive Inter victory in all competition without conceding a single goal, something the club had not achieved since six from November to December 2007.
If Dumfries and Federico Dimarco are to be considered defenders, then Inter have scored 14 goals with members of Inzaghi’s defence so far this season.
“That is our style of football, our defenders push up and contribute to the attacking moves, so find themselves in the right positions. Dumfries has always scored goals for Inter and the Netherlands, so he is not a surprise,” continued Inzaghi.
Lautaro Martinez had several huge scoring opportunities and failed to finish them off, but worked hard for the team yet again.
“He was unlucky against Carnesecchi, who made some extraordinary saves, but we get a lot out of our strikers that goes beyond goals. I am fortunate to have five forwards whose first focus is that Inter win matches.”
Thuram went off at half-time with a minor muscular issue, so will he be ready for the Supercoppa Final against either Juventus or Milan on Monday January 6?
“I don’t know yet if he will be able to play. He felt the adductor harden in the first half, so I told him to move around on the pitch during the half-time break and he didn’t feel right, so we thought it best not to risk it,” concluded Inzaghi.
