Italy legend Roberto Baggio retired 21 years ago today: ‘Eternally grateful to those who still show their affection for me.’
The Divin Codino hung up his boots 21 years ago, playing his final game for Brescia at San Siro against Carlo Ancelotti’s Milan.
Baggio posted a picture from that game on his Instagram today, writing: “21 years ago I said goodbye to football. A lifetime has passed off the pitch, yet I’m still lucky enough to feel the fans’ love every single day. Eternally grateful to those who, in one way or another, still show their affection for me.”
Baggio accompanied his latest social media post with a Bruce Springsteen song, Hungry Heart.
Baggio is a big Springsteen fan and attended one of the Boss’ concerts in Ferrara in 2023 alongside Milan legend Ambrosini.
Baggio, 58, played for several Serie A clubs in his career: Vicenza, Fiorentina, Juventus, Milan, Bologna, Inter and Brescia.
He scored 205 goals in 452 appearances in Italy’s top flight, winning two Serie A titles, one with Juventus and one with Milan, one Coppa Italia and one UEFA Cup with the Bianconeri.
The Italian legend won the 1993 Ballon d’Or while playing for Juventus.
Earlier this week, he was among the Calcio legends attending the Coppa Italia Final in Rome.
