It's amazing what new lows media members manage to find when discussing Aston Villa. If it isn't a disingenuous slight concerning Ollie Watkins, it's something else that aims to further downplay the status and progress of the club. The latest highlighted senseless attack has come from pundit Jamie Carragher.

While discussing Villa on the Stick to Football podcast, the former Liverpool defender made it clear that he does not view Emiliano Martínez nearly as highly as most others do. That in itself would be fair enough. Different minds have a right to assess players at various positions differently.

It's how Carragher made his argument that becomes the issue. The former LFC center back not only stated his opinion of 'Dibu' not being the best GK in England but also took a completely unnecessary jab at Villa in order to bolster what is a silly notion to begin with.

While speaking on how he views Martinez, Carragher said:

"He's not the best goalie in the world. He wouldn't be playing for Aston Villa if he was the best goalie in the world, he just wouldn't be. He's in the top three or four in the Premier League."

According to the pundit, Alisson Becker is the best in the EPL. No doubt, the Brazilian is quite good in between the posts. Most would still prefer to have Martinez as their starting No. 1 over anyone else, even so. If the argument is just granted to the Reds keeper, there certainly aren't two or three total goalies who are better than the Argentinian.

Spites Aston Villa to win his losing argument

To make the argument while downplaying Villa is simply a step too far. AVFC are a well-run club that have a number of great players on their roster. On a positional basis, there are several Villans who stack up with their contemporaries at other clubs.

Not naming Martinez the best GK in the world only based on his being at Villa is a disrespectful and incorrect statement. While AVFC continues to be viewed as a club that is below the classic 'top six,' the efforts of Unai Emery and Monchi continue to push that false narrative.

For Carragher, Villa having the best keeper in the world is an unfathomable feat. What the argument is missing most of all is how AVFC can get the most out of players and develop their skills. Someone can come to B6 and, through their and the staff's efforts, become one of the best at their position. Except in the case of Martinez, he's solidly the global No. 1.
