Southampton have officially been relegated from the Premier League following a 3-1 defeat away to Tottenham Hotspur.
In reality, the Saints have been relegated for some time with the team just unable to compete with the top tier sides – a fate their fellow promoted teams will likely face soon.
Spurs opened the scoring in the 13th minute when Brennan Johnson in the right place at the right time to convert Djed Spence's cut-back – a goal that had come just after Southampton had hit the woodwork.
Lucas Bergvall thought he had made it 2-0 when he converted from a set-piece only for a VAR check to take six minutes to decide he had been fractionally offside.
But the home side eventually managed to double their lead just before the break with Johnson taking advantage of Southampton's inability to clear the lines.
The visitors did manage to pull one back in the 90th minute through Matheus Fernandes only to concede a penalty late into stoppage time when Welington was penalised for a foul on Johnson.
Substitute Mathys Tel was the man to take the penalty and he slotted it into the corner just out of the reach of Aaron Ramsdale.
