Journalist Confirms Liverpool’s Stance on Luis Diaz Contract Talks

As Liverpool fans still bask in the glory of a sensational Premier League title under Arne Slot’s stewardship, attention slowly shifts from silverware to summer strategy. While transfers dominate headlines, one name has started to quietly linger in the background – Luis Diaz.
In a recent episode of Anfield Index, respected journalist David Lynch spoke with Dave Davis and offered insightful – if slightly sobering – context on the Colombian winger’s situation. Amid reports that Liverpool are set to open contract negotiations with Diaz, Lynch cast a sceptical eye over the speculation.
“I haven’t heard anything on that to tell me that there’s definitely talks going to take place.”
These words don’t suggest urgency from the club. And that, in itself, says a lot.
Typically, a player with two years left on their contract would be prime for renewal discussions – especially if they’ve had a positive campaign. However, Lynch was clear in his view that Liverpool may not be in any rush to tie Diaz down on improved terms.
“He’s got two years left and usually you would be looking at extending at this point, but he’s on low wages, he’s at an age where you think we could’ve seen his peak years already.”
It’s a stark assessment, but not an unkind one. Diaz has had a mixed season under Slot – moments of quality, flashes of explosiveness, but perhaps not the consistent output of Salah. For a player turning 28 next year, Liverpool might believe they’re already getting the best he has to offer.

There’s also a financial component here. Diaz reportedly earns significantly less than some of his attacking teammates. From the player’s perspective, that’s understandably frustrating – particularly after contributing during a title-winning campaign.
“Diaz will be desperate to sign a new deal because he is a relatively low earner compared to his teammates…”
That desperation, however, is not always matched by the club’s willingness. As Lynch suggests, the smart business move for Liverpool may be to delay renewal talks – not out of disrespect, but strategic planning.
“For Liverpool, I think the ideal situation for the club is to get one more year out of him and then sell him to Saudi next summer.”

This aligns with a wider trend across Europe. Top clubs are increasingly viewing the Saudi Pro League as a viable exit route for players nearing their late twenties – providing solid fees for the club and lucrative contracts for the player.
Slot will want to keep his squad balanced and motivated next season. If Diaz stays, and no contract extension is agreed, there’s a delicate psychological balance to be managed. Will the winger feel undervalued? Or does he channel that frustration into a final flourish before a potentially huge move abroad?
“They’ll get the transfer fee and he will get that big contract that he has been wanting.”
It’s a scenario that suits both parties – at least on paper. But football isn’t played on spreadsheets. It’s emotional, reactive and unpredictable. One big season from Diaz, or a sudden drop in form, could shift the equation entirely.
Arne Slot’s debut title triumph has laid the foundations for a fascinating new chapter at Liverpool. With heavyweights like Salah possibly winding down their time at Anfield, Diaz’s future becomes all the more intriguing. David Lynch’s insight, shared via Anfield Index, suggests a quiet pragmatism from the club rather than a rush to reward.
Diaz still has time to define his legacy at Liverpool. Whether that’s as a long-term star or a valuable short-term asset headed for Saudi riches – only next season will tell.
