West Ham are planning a significant overhaul this summer with a focus on refreshing their squad by bringing in younger talent, and Newcastle could find themselves facing stiff competition in the process.

Currently, West Ham boasts the oldest squad in the Premier League, a reality that’s been evident on the pitch this season. Their recent defeat at home to Newcastle United highlighted the stark contrast between the two teams.

This contrast has not gone unnoticed by West Ham’s new recruitment chief, Kyle Macauley, who is keen to address the issue of an ageing squad under manager Graham Potter.

However, this ambition may not sit well with Eddie Howe and Newcastle, as according to Alex Crook, West Ham appear to be targeting one of the Magpies’ top transfer targets: James Trafford, the standout goalkeeper for Burnley.

The 22-year-old, who has been a revelation in the Championship this season, keeping 27 clean sheets and conceding just 11 goals, is seen by many as a future world-class talent. Teammate CJ Egan-Riley has even gone so far as to predict that Trafford will become one of the top goalkeepers in the world.

Despite Newcastle’s previous interest in Trafford, it now looks as though West Ham are determined to beat them to the punch. Journalists have confirmed that West Ham scouts have already been watching Trafford closely, and if they succeed in landing the young goalkeeper, it would represent a key part of their squad overhaul.
