Liverpool’s Uruguayan striker Darwin Nunez has been the subject of significant transfer interest from Saudi Arabia’s Al Nassr, but as Lewis Steele of the Daily Mail reports, Liverpool have made their stance clear. The Premier League leaders see Nunez as central to their plans, rejecting Al Nassr’s approaches in January.
Lewis Steele understands that despite Liverpool’s reluctance to part ways with their star striker, the Saudi Pro League remains undeterred. “The Saudi Pro League has not been put off by Liverpool’s reluctance to sell and are expected to continue with their pursuit in the summer,” Steele reports. Sources in the Gulf state have revealed plans for a major investment in 2025, aiming to attract more international stars to their league.
Al Nassr, already boasting players like former Liverpool icon Sadio Mane, Jhon Duran (who joined from Aston Villa for £64 million), Aymeric Laporte, Marcelo Brozovic, and Cristiano Ronaldo, are keen to add Nunez to their roster. However, Liverpool’s firm stance suggests that prising Nunez away from Anfield won’t be straightforward.

Under new manager Arne Slot, Nunez’s role has become increasingly significant. Slot has dedicated time to refining the striker’s game, both tactically and technically. The Dutch manager recently noted, “He’s been better indeed. In general, we use the No 9 better and better than we did in the beginning of the season. We used to be quite dependent on our wingers, but now we are starting to use our No 9 more and more.”
This shift is reflected in Nunez’s recent performances. He scored a decisive brace off the bench against Brentford and delivered strong showings against Bournemouth and Tottenham. While some external critics suggest Nunez is struggling at Anfield, internally, Liverpool remains confident in his potential and are committed to maximising his contributions.
Nunez’s recent absence from a couple of training sessions was due to personal reasons, as his partner gave birth last week. However, he was back in the squad for Liverpool’s FA Cup defeat to Plymouth on Sunday. The club’s support for Nunez extends beyond the pitch, highlighting their belief in his long-term future at Anfield.
In other news from the Daily Mail, young midfielder Tyler Morton faces a significant setback. He requires surgery on a shoulder injury, potentially ruling him out for three months. Morton, who spent last season on loan at Hull City, had attracted interest from clubs like Bayer Leverkusen. However, Liverpool’s preference for a permanent transfer at around £20 million complicated potential moves.

Darwin Nunez’s rejection of Saudi overtures signals the club’s commitment to nurturing young talent and maintaining a competitive edge in the Premier League. While the Saudi Pro League’s financial power is undeniable, Liverpool’s refusal to entertain offers underscores their focus on footballing priorities over financial gain.
Arne Slot’s tactical adjustments are paying dividends, with Nunez becoming more integrated into Liverpool’s attacking strategy. Fans have seen glimpses of the player they hoped for when he arrived from Benfica, and there’s a palpable sense of excitement about his development under Slot’s guidance.
However, the persistent interest from Saudi clubs could become a distraction. It’s essential for Liverpool to remain steadfast in their plans and ensure Nunez feels valued and central to their future. His recent performances suggest he’s ready to repay that faith.
On the flip side, Tyler Morton’s injury is a blow, especially considering his potential move to Bayer Leverkusen. Fans will hope for a swift recovery and that the young midfielder can find his place in Liverpool’s setup or secure a beneficial move when fit.
Ultimately, while the lure of Saudi riches is strong, Liverpool’s focus on player development and on-pitch success is what sets them apart—and what keeps fans optimistic about the future.
