Milan suffered an injury blow in last night’s nail-biting 1-0 home win against Girona in the penultimate Champions League round. Brazilian right-back Emerson Royal limped off the field less than five minutes into the game.
Indeed, Emerson had to come off after just four minutes, forcing new Milan boss Sergio Conceicao to bring on Davide Calabria. However, the Rossoneri captain delivered another woeful showing, making numerous comic mistakes on either side of halftime.
Luckily for Calabria, his mistakes went unpunished. Girona’s uneventful performance made it easy for Milan to hold onto a slender halftime lead. Rafael Leao’s masterclass late in the first half settled an evenly-contested fixture at the San Siro.
More importantly, Milan finished matchday seven in the top eight. Conceicao’s men are on the verge of securing automatic last-16 qualification. Manchester City captain Kyle Walker will probably elevate Milan’s defensive qualities in the knockout stages.
The 34-year-old could even make his Champions League debut for Milan next week against Dinamo Zagreb. Walker is one step away from joining the Rossoneri after the Italian giants struck an agreement with the perennial Premier League champions.
If everything goes to plan, Walker could be at Coneicao’s disposal already next weekend. Milan will lock horns with Parma in a must-win Serie A encounter at home, seeking revenge for a dismal 2-1 defeat in August’s reverse fixture at Stadio Ennio Tardini.
With Emerson out with an injury and Calabria out of form, Walker’s imminent arrival couldn’t have come at a more opportune moment for Milan.
