These two soccer clubs have quite the storied history with each other. Sunday marks the 40th meeting between these two teams as the LA Galaxy visit the Portland Timbers.
Both teams have won 15 times and lost 15 times against one another. There have been nine draws recorded when the Galaxy and Timbers do battle.
This time, it's the LA Galaxy seeking their first win against a Pacific Northwest rival that has just one victory to brag themselves. The Los Angeles Galaxy did not expect to start the MLS season at 0-0-3 to begin their sixth title defense.
Last season, the two clubs split wins with each team winning at home. The Portland Timbers qualified for the Wild Card round and hosted the ninth-seeded Vancouver Whitecaps.
Portland was upset and their season was cut short. The Los Angeles Galaxy ended up winning their sixth MLS Cup title last year.
Portland stomped the visiting Galaxy late in the season last year. Evander scored half of the team's four goals. The LA Galaxy's two scores weren;t enough to match them.
The Los Angeles Galaxy was not able to sweep the regular season series after winning 3-2 in mid-July. The two teams tied both games in 2023.
Between the 2021 & 2022 MLS seasons, the Los Angeles Galaxy went 3-1-1 in the five games against Portland. That came on the heels of losing three out of four against the Timbers in 2020.
The 40th match up has quite a bit at stake for both teams. The LA Galaxy currently sit at the bottom of the Western Conference standings. Portland is three spots above them entering Sunday's game.
In those 39 games, the Los Angeles Galaxy have scored 66 times but allowed 74 goals by the Timbers. If the LA Galaxy are able to win by at least two goals (or more) against Portland, they can change their position in the standings significantly.
The LA Galaxy will host the Portland Timbers at the end of next month. The rematch this season will be in Carson, California at Dignity Health Sports Park on Sunday, April 27.
