Lazio are once again pursuing the services of Empoli midfielder Jacopo Fazzini, who can seamlessly slot into Maurizio Sarri’s tactical plans.
The 66-year-old is reportedly one step away from finalizing his return to Formello. Therefore, the team is expected to move away from Marco Baroni’s 4-2-3-1 formation and revert to Sarri’s 4-3-3 system.
This tactical change will have little impact on Nicolo Rovella and Matteo Guendouzi, two players who were brought by Sarri and took their game up a notch with Baroni. The Italian would be the ideal deep-lying playmaker in the three-man midfield, while the Frenchman is a competent box-to-box midfielder. Nevertheless, the identity of the third midfielder remains shrouded in mystery.
As Il Corriere dello Sport notes, Matias Vecino’s future remains uncertain with his contract expiring at the end of the month, while Fisayo Dele-Bashiru hasn’t entirely impressed in his first season in Italian football. Danilo Cataldi could return following a loan spell at Fiorentina, but he was considered a Regista during Sarri’s first reign rather than a box-to-box midfielder.
Therefore, the management will likely have to resort to the market. The Roman newspaper believes Fazzini’s name could return in fashion, as he’s a profile who was appreciated by the former Chelsea and Juventus boss.
The Biancocelesti tried to sign the 22-year-old in January, but failed to find an agreement with Empoli, with the two clubs clashing in public. Nevertheless, with the Tuscans suffering relegation to Serie B, keeping the young midfielder at the Carlo Castellani Stadium is highly unlikely.
The young midfielder was in superb form at the end of the season, scoring four goals and providing an assist in his last six rounds, but it wasn’t enough to salvage the Azzurri.
