After the game between AC Milan and Girona, Rafael Leao spoke to the media about his performance and the winning goal. He discussed the positive effects of Sergio Conceicao wanting to ‘die for his players’.
Milan created several chances to open the scoring against Girona in the first half, with both Theo Hernandez and Yunus Musah missing some big ones. In the 37th minute, therefore, Rafael Leao stepped up and found the back of the net with a powerful finish.
The winger was named the MOTM in our player ratings and after the full-time whistle, he stopped by the Prime Video studio (via MilanNews) and shared his thoughts on the game. He highlighted just how positive the mentality of Conceicao is for the team.
When you are happy, do the performances come?
“The joy of playing with this shirt, of playing a Champions League match. This team is doing an incredible job and we managed to win in front of our fans. We are happy.”
How happy are you with the standings?
“That was our goal. The atmosphere is very nice, we are all united and we are starting to understand what the coach wants.”
What are the differences between Conceicao and Fonseca?
“They are different coaches but it’s the mentality, to always be on the ball. He got close to me right away and doesn’t let me give up, he does this with everyone from the start. Today, in the second half, we didn’t score but we stayed together in defence.”
How much does Conceicao talk to you?
“A lot. He’s trying to help me as a man and a player. I’m trying to understand what he wants because he loves me. I try to always give 100% because he’s a coach who wants to die for his players and I want to do the same.”
On the best version of Leao…
“I always try to give 100% for the team. Sometimes it doesn’t go well, football is like that. Today it went very well.”
Thanks to the win, Milan now have a big chance of finishing in the top 8, which would send them straight to the Champions League knockout phase. Dinamo Zagreb remain and that game is scheduled for next week, with a win most likely needed to succeed.
