The Whites’ ground currently has a capacity of just under 38,000, but it has been reported by the Yorkshire Evening Post that these new plans will increase that figure to 56,500.

After winning the Championship, the 49ers Enterprises' ambitious plan to charge towards English football’s summit can commence further, with an update to Elland Road an important element in that.

Leeds’ proposals to expand their ground’s West and North Stands were put before the City Plans Panel on Thursday as renovations draw ever closer.

The Whites’ seven-phase plan for expanding Elland Road’s West and North Stands has been published this week, put to the City Plans Panel on Thursday.

Firstly, the club will be focusing on the West Stand and the corners on each side in the first phases of the project, which have been named 01/A to 01/C, building behind the existing structure before demolishing the original to finish construction, bringing the capacity up to 46,000 at the halfway point.

After that, attention will turn to the North Stand in what is being labelled phase 02/A to 02/C, where demolition comes right away to build the new stand behind the retained lower tier – which brings the capacity up to an estimated 53,000.

The improved capacities for each stand are as follows:

Leeds expect to commence construction of the West Stand in May 2026 and complete the project in winter 2028, and intend to finish North Stand construction in winter 2030, meaning it will be five-and-a-half years until Leeds fans actually see the vision become complete if all goes to plan.

Leeds enjoy a privileged position as one of England’s biggest football clubs, possessing a ginormous fanbase and a huge stature within the game.

The 21st century has been a turbulent one so far for the Whites, constantly dealing with the highs and lows of promotion and relegation throughout the Football League.

However, as they look to solidify their position as a top-flight outfit in years to come, operating out of one of the country’s leading grounds would go a long way to establishing themselves back at the forefront of English football.

There seems to be a trend of ambitious owners coming into the English game and targeting a new ground as a way to state their intentions.

Tom Wagner’s plans for Birmingham City have been a recent example of this, unwavering in his vision of introducing a new stadium that could hold up to 62,000 fans, which is a large part of the Blues’ Sports Quarter project, which is estimated to cost £2-3 billion.
