We asked Davey Hat-Trick to give us his match ratings and player comments after Liverpool 1 Newcastle 2.
Newcastle won a cup final at Wembley, against one of the best sides in the world, and deserved to. The Liverpool fans I bumped into after the game were unanimously of that opinion too.
If you want to beat this Liverpool side in any stadium in any competition at any stage of the season, you need to be at your absolute best, and even then you may not be good enough.
Newcastle gave a performance for the ages and dominated Liverpool for almost the entire game. Everybody in black and white put their heart and souls into this game and will deservedly go down in the history of our club.
I will never forget the faces of the people around me at the final whistle. There was joy, there were tears, strangers were hugging each other, and the black and white hordes looked like they never wanted to leave the stadium. I don’t think the players did either.
All the headlines will reference the decades-long wait for a trophy, but this day should not signify the end of a story. It has to be the start of something.
We beat Liverpool, Arsenal, Forest and Chelsea on the way to lifting the trophy, and at the time of writing they are the top four teams in the country according to the tables. So we now know how to win a cup and we know we can do it against the best teams in the land. Let’s do it again soon.
A word for the fans. They sounded and looked great – the free scarves turned out to be a stroke of genius. I don’t know if it was the Wembley acoustics, but it sounded like there were three times as many Geordies as Scousers in the stadium.
Look away now if you are one of those readers who is always looking to have a go at certain players. Everyone is getting a good mark from me today. After all, they achieved something that legends such as Keegan, Shearer, MacDonald, Sir Bobby et al never did. They won a trophy for Newcastle United.
Nick Pope – 9
One excellent save, a couple of routine ones, and played with more confidence than of late. Commanding.
Kieran Trippier – 9
Absolutely superb.
What a day to put in the sort of performance we saw a couple of seasons ago
Fabian Schar – 10
Another who looked on top of his game.
His positional play, his timing, his heading and his passing were flawless.
Dan Burn – 10
What a week for England’s Dan Burn and what a performance today.
He was brave, he was focused, and he was one of several leaders on the pitch.
And he capped it with a thunderous header from distance for our first goal. Was given the Player of the Match award and I didn’t hear anyone arguing.
Tino Livramento – 9
Disciplined in defence (Salah barely got a sniff of goal), enthusiastic in attack, and did what he usually doesn’t: crossed onto Murphy’s head with his left foot, and that led to our second goal. A mature display.
Bruno Guimaraes – 10
Gave everything for the cause (I think his cause is the Newcastle fans) and won just about every second ball.
Showed superhuman levels of energy and is now officially a Newcastle legend.
Sandro Tonali – 10
For me, this game was won in the midfield.
Bruno was one reason for that and Sandro was another.
Put on some great tackles and just seemed to overwhelm Liverpool’s much-lauded midfield triumvirate
Joelinton – 10
And our other midfielder was equally good.
Was always in the thick of the action, brushed aside anyone daft enough to take him on, and was a constant driving force for Newcastle. Superb.
Jacob Murphy – 9
Looked to get at Liverpool whenever he could and got a few promising-looking crosses into the box.
Unexpectedly won a back-post header to get an assist for Isak’s goal. Another one who grafted non-stop. When he was subbed off, he could barely walk, and that is not an exaggeration.
Alexander Isak – 10
Great strikers (and he is a great striker), can be well-marshalled for the majority of a game, yet find the net when given a split-second opportunity. This was such a game. Pounced on two chances and scored two goals. One was given offside in dubious circumstances, but the other counted. Nearly got a third too, with an improvised attempt from a very difficult chance
Harvey Barnes – 9
I was grumbling about Gordon’s red card before the game.
I thought that with TAA out, AG could have had a field day against Quansah. I needn’t have worried.
Barnes was a constant threat down the left, worked his bits off, and looked fitter than of late.
Joe Willock – 8
A lively display from Joe, followed by a bit of well-judged timewasting at the end.
Callum Wilson – 8
Kept the Liverpool defence occupied and did his defensive duties when the reds were threatening.
Emil Krafth – 7
Only on for 10 minutes (all injury time).
That isn’t always easy for a defender but Emil slotted in seamlessly. Even enjoyed a promising wander upfield.
