Liverpool have been sensational this season, topping the Premier League and UEFA Champions League table. While star attacker Mohamed Salah has received much of the plaudits for their outstanding campaign, the defence has also contributed massively.

Liverpool have the best defensive record in the league and Champions League, with the backline of Virgil Van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate, Trent Alexander-Arnold, and Andy Robertson proving a solid bunch.

However, Liverpool need to start planning for succession, with Van Dijk and Alexander-Arnold set to walk away on a free transfer this summer.

Meanwhile, Liverpool stalwart Andy Robertson has declined since last season, and a new left-back must be on the agenda this summer.

Hato broke out at Ajax last term with the Amsterdammers looking for options in central defence to replace Jurrien Timber. The 18-year-old has since been shifted to left-back, where he has continued to develop into a fine player.

Hato has recorded three goals and seven assists this term. The Netherlands international (with five caps) is one of the finest young defensive talents in the game and is improving in the final third.

Hato could be an excellent option to replace Robertson in the long term. The Liverpool defender still has plenty to offer, but a succession plan must be in place.

Hato is not the only left-back on the list, with Bournemouth star Milos Kerkez an option for the Reds amongst others. However, Liverpool will likely face an intense battle with Chelsea for his signature.

As Liverpool have seen with Moises Caicedo and Romeo, the allure of Champions League football does not hold up when the cash-rich Blues come calling.
