Liverpool links to Chelsea regular return – but this is why a deal is difficult

Levi Colwill is very much established as a Chelsea starter now. He played regularly last season when fit, and this season has been one of the few almost ever presents in Enzo Maresca’s lineup.
So it’s easy to forget that just before he came back to play an important role in Mauricio Pochettino’s team at the start of last season, there were serious rumours about him leaving. His path to first team football at Chelsea wasn’t clear, and after an exceptional season on loan with Roberto de Zerbi’s Brighton there was a lot of talk the Cobham product might push to stay there permanently.
In the end it was a non starter – Colwill came back and has been playing regularly ever since. But there has always been a trickly of rumours connecting him with moves away. A little under a year ago, Liverpool and PSG were linked, with Neil Jones explaining that the reds had a “long-standing” interesting in Colwill.

Liverpool are looking towards the future post Virgil van Dijk (a player Colwill described as his footballing idol), and along with reported Chelsea target Dean Huijsen, they’re being linked with summer moves to Anfield by an exclusive from CaughtOffside.
Given Colwill has a solid contract and Chelsea are counting on him for the future, we can’t see any move happening this summer. But as his deal winds down, it becomes more possible that he is affordable for the Reds, and Chelsea might have to start consider selling him if he kicks up a fuss.
Hopefully by then he will be fully established as a leader in a really successful Chelsea team, and we won’t have to worry about him pushing to go anywhere.
