Liverpool have created a shortlist of potential replacements for Trent Alexander-Arnold should the defender leave the club next summer.

Alexander-Arnold is out of contract at the end of the season and there has been no public progress on an extension, with Real Madrid monitoring developments.

The 26-year-old is one of three big names whose Liverpool deals expire at the end of the campaign, alongside Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah. It has been suggested that Real Madrid could accelerate their interest in the England international in January, following Dani Carvajal’s ACL injury.

According to CaughtOffside, Liverpool have a three-player shortlist of right-back options to replace Alexander-Arnold. Bayer Leverkusen defender Jeremie Frimpong headlines the list, following his excellent performances in the Bundesliga.

The 23-year-old scored nine goals and laid on seven assists as Leverkusen won a maiden German title in 2023/24 and has emerged as one of the most effective wing-backs in Europe.

Liverpool are also said to be monitoring AS Monaco’s Vanderson, who has won two caps for Brazil at senior level, and Fiorentina’s Michael Kayode.

Alexander-Arnold cryptic on Liverpool future

Alexander-Arnold spoke on his future this week and said his sole focus is on improvement as a player.

“This was a conversation I had last camp with (Eberechi) Eze when we’re going to Ireland,” Alexander-Arnold said to ITV Sport.

“I was on the coach down the airport and we had this conversation [about winning trophies]. I said, you know, that there’s a chance I may never win another trophy in my career again. There’s a chance of that. There’s a chance I win many, many more.

“And you’ll only know the morning after you retire. You’ll look yourself in the mirror and you’ll have a feeling of either regret or satisfaction of what you have achieved.

“But I don’t think you can value that on trophies and medals or goals and assists; anything like that. It’s more [that] I give it absolutely everything from start to finish and I’ve put everything into it.

“And as long as I can say that, that every single day I put everything in to it, I tried to get better every single day, I tried to improve myself, I tried to be the best player I could be for the team and I tried to help the team win as many games as possible, and I believe that I maximised the potential that everyone told me from a very young age that I had, then I’ll be more than satisfied.”
