Malo Gusto previews Brentford game knowing his place is under major threat from world class option

Chelsea play Brentford this afternoon, and we’re all excited to see if the Blues can carry their momentum from a midweek win over Spurs into a tough game at the G-Tech stadium.
The Bees have been a real bogey team for us in recent times, and the physical, defensive way they play will be a real challenge compared to the space in behind that Tottenham were giving us on Thursday.
Speaking ahead of the game, Malo Gusto made it clear that nobody at Chelsea was taking this game lightly:
“Everyone is pushing for the top four and that’s normal. Every team in the Premier League is top. It’s important for us to play step by step, game by game, and to not think too much about it,” the defender said in quotes on the Chelsea website.
“We just have to stay focused on our games, stick to our plan, and to try our best. That’s the way we will finish top four, so we have to keep pushing like that. Our target is to finish in the top four. We are hungry to finish in the top four. We don’t have to hide, just show our best and keep fighting. We will need everyone.’
“It’s an important game against Brentford and we have to switch on straightaway. We have to concentrate. And the spirit will be important for the team. We have to keep fighting together and continue creating something between us as a team.”
Malo Gusto and Reece James compete in training.
It’s not even certain that Gusto will play – Reece James was rested against Spurs, which all but guarantees he will be in action today. The question is whether he plays in midfield with a formation shift, or whether he replaces Gusto at right back.
The answer to that will tell us a lot about Enzo Maresca’s plans for the season.
