Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has confirmed that Phil Foden and Manuel Akanji are back in training but first-choice goalkeeper Ederson and star striker Erling Haaland will not be fit for his side’s game against Everton on Saturday.

Foden missed their 5-2 win against Crystal Palace last week after he picked up a knock against Manchester United and Akanji has been out since the Champions League tie against Real Madrid in February because of an abductor problem.

The City boss is still unsure whether Foden and Akanji will be able to get some minutes on Saturday, however, despite their return to training.

“Phil came back on Thursday and trained today in his second training session since the injury at Old Trafford,” he said.

“Manuel Akanji took part in two or three training sessions with us, and I see him moving really well. We’ll see today if he will be able to play this weekend.”

The Everton match will certainly come too early for Nathan Ake and John Stones, however. Ake has been out since the win against Plymouth Argyle in March while Stones has not played since the second-leg against Madrid.

Guardiola had positive news on the duo despite not being able to return just yet.

“They are getting better but they cannot play yet,” he said.

The Spanish manager is also unsure how long Ederson and Haaland will be out for.

Haaland limped off in the FA Cup victory against Bournemouth in March after injuring his ankle and is still set to be sidelined for a few weeks yet.

And Ederson suffered a muscle injury in the win over Crystal Palace.

He said: “Ederson is not ready for tomorrow and I do not know [whether it will be a longer term injury].

“Haaland is not ready either and he will not be ready for the next few games.”
