Amid talk of extreme changes to the WSL’s structure, Gareth Taylor admits he has always wanted expansion but is unsure about the removal of relegation.
Reports have come out detailing a possible restructuring of the Women’s Super League which could see promotion and relegation scrapped.
The proposals, scheduled for discussion today, are still in their infancy and would represent a significant departure from the traditions of English football.
Man City Women’s manager Gareth Taylor has shared his thoughts on the proposed changes to the WSL structure. He admitted: “I only had a quick brief overview of it this morning.
“I have always had this thing of potentially making the league bigger, more teams, 14, 16 teams I think it would change a lot, would create more competition within it.
“On first visual of looking at that piece this morning around no relegation, I can completely understand the reasons why, because it allows stability a little bit for those clubs to invest and create more competition.
“There’s positive and negative to both things. I think sometimes I’ve always been about keeping it simple.
“I think promotion and relegation are always going to be what supporters and teams play for and crave.
“I think that really is going to be difficult to move away from that.”
The removal of the jeopardy of relegation would greatly improve the stability of WSL teams, Taylor says, however.
“I can see all the reasons why they were suggesting it and trying to create stability within teams.
“If you look at Reading as an example, probably in my time and certainly in the first couple of seasons, were in the WSL, have fallen away and have now fallen out of the Championship.
“I think that’s always kind of tough when you’re playing in the league below, knowing that realistically you’re never going to have an opportunity to come up because it’s ring-fenced.
“I think I need to have a look at it a little bit more.
“It is good that the relevant people are discussing this and having conversations around how we can improve the product and make it better and make it more competitive at both ends.”
