Manchester United icon Wayne Rooney is reportedly in contention to become the next manager of Blackburn Rovers.
Rooney has been out of a job since last year December, when he parted ways with Plymouth Argyle after a miserable run of just five wins from 25 matches.
The former England international has so far struggled in his managerial career, enduring difficult spells with Derby County, DC United and Birmingham City – where he was infamously sacked after just 83 days in charge following nine losses in 15 games.
He didn’t fare any better at Argyle, with the club at the bottom of the table for most of his reign.
United’s record goalscorer has been working as a pundit for various news outlets including the BBC and TNT Sports but now, it has emerged that a return to management could be on the cards.
According to talkSPORT, Rooney is a candidate for the Blackburn hot seat.
Despite only being appointed two months ago, Valerien Ismael is under intense pressure at the Championship outfit. The former West Brom gaffer has won one of his eight games and it looks like his time at Ewood Park is coming to a premature end.
talkSPORT say Rooney is in contention for the role at Blackburn, with hopes that he can help turn the club’s fortunes around.
The 39-year-old is understood to still harbour ambitions of succeeding in management, despite the setbacks he has encountered so far.
Blackburn are currently in 10th position in the Championship standings with 56 points, four points adrift of Millwall, who are a spot above them.
Meanwhile, United are back in action on Thursday when they host Lyon in the second leg of their Europa League quarter-final tie.
Kick-off is at 20:00 BST.
