Manchester United suffered their 11th Premier League defeat of the season against Crystal Palace at Old Trafford on Sunday.

The Red Devils lacked a cutting edge in attack, with just two shots on target. Manager Ruben Amorim may want a forward signing before the deadline.

The Athletic’s David Ornstein now reports that the Red Devils enquired about Chelsea playmaker Christopher Nkunku on Sunday, but it was quickly rebuffed.

No clubs were willing to meet the Blues’ £65 million price tag. United and Bayern Munich value him at around £40m, given his lack of regular playing time.

The Red Devils also made a move to sign him on loan. Both Chelsea and the Frenchman were against a temporary deal before tonight’s deadline.

Missing out on Nkunku does not appear a blow

The 27-year-old signed for the Blues from RB Leipzig with much hype in 2023.

However, his career has been on a downslide since. He had a difficult debut season with multiple injuries.

Nkunku has stayed fit this term, but Blues manager Enzo Maresca has preferred Nicolas Jackson to lead the line over him in the Premier League games.

The Frenchman, described as ‘world-class‘ by Bundesliga.com, is frustrated with his situation but does not appear keen on pursuing a temporary move.

Missing out on Nkunku is not a blow for United. He has yet to prove his credentials in the Premier League with the Blues.

He has had a worrying injury record over the past few years. There is a risk of picking up another injury if his workload increases in the next few months.

Alejandro Garnacho, Amad Diallo and Kobbie Mainoo have shown promise in the number 10 position, and Amorim should work with the promising trio.

With the transfer window closing tonight, it seems unlikely that United will pursue an alternative.
