With Manchester City having signed Nico from FC Porto during the January transfer window City’s midfield rebuild has begun. Nico has shown what he will add to City’s midfield since arriving at the club. With Rodri’s return from an ACL injury looming on the horizon, we do have an idea of what Manchester City’s rebuilt midfield could look like. You do sense that City will continue their midfield rejig in the summer. One player who has continually been linked with a potential move to Manchester City is Newcastle midfielder Bruno Guimaraes.

James Holland has previously reported for TeamTalk that Manchester City are hopeful of signing Bruno Guimaraes in the summer. Furthermore, Holland adds that there is a possibility that Guimaraes could leave Newcastle for £85 million next summer. Holland goes on to report that there is a verbal pact between Bruno Guimaraes and Newcastle that the Brazilian midfielder can leave the club for £85 million if Newcastle fail to secure Champions League football.

But now a new report from Mark Brus for CaughtOffside that Barcelona now have an interest in signing Bruno Guimaraes. Furthermore, Brus adds that Manchester City and Arsenal have also held an interest in signing Newcastle’s captain. But there is an interesting snippet in Mark Brus’ new report. Brus adds that City are focusing on signing Atalanta midfielder Ederson in the summer. Based on all of the available information Ederson would be a cheaper and quality alternative to Newcastle captain Bruno Guimaraes.

Ederson could be a cheaper alternative to Bruno Guimaraes for Manchester City to pursue.

As per James Holland’s report for TeamTalk Bruno Guimaraes is likely to cost any interested club at least £85 million. That’s a sizable transfer fee for a player. It’s especially expensive considering that Manchester City will likely be in the market for several players in the summer. On that front alone a cheaper move for Atalanta midfielder Ederson does make sense for Manchester City.

Rudy Galetti has previously reported for TeamTalk that Atalanta has set an asking price of €58-60 million for Ederson. That makes him a cheaper alternative to Bruno Guimaraes. For me, outside of the fact that Guimaraes is a proven Premier League player, there isn’t a heap of difference in quality between Ederson and Bruno Guimaraes as players. They play similar roles although they do it slightly differently. Either player would be a quality addition to Pep Guardiola’s squad. But if Manchester City don’t want to spend big on Guimaraes a move for Ederson does make sense. That will be something to watch for come the summer transfer window.

It does appear that a battle for any club to sign Bruno Guimaraes may be looming. That’s if he leaves Newcastle United at all in the summer. From a Manchester City point of view a move for Ederson does make sense. Based on Mark Brus’ report that does appear to be City’s line of thinking.
