Manchester City take on Southampton today at the St. Mary’s Stadium. It’s another crucial Premier League fixture for Pep Guardiola’s side against an already relegated Saints outfit. A win today could see Pep Guardiola’s side draw level on points with second-placed Arsenal. But more importantly, if City can pick up three crucial points today, it will edge them closer to securing Champions League football for next season. Southampton have struggled this season but will be determined to take a scalp before they return to the Championship.
Here is the latest Manchester City injury news and my predicted City starting eleven ahead of today’s match.
Several players are unavailable for selection today for Manchester City. John Stones is out due to injury. As per Pep Guardiola’s update yesterday, Rodri, Nathan Ake and Oscar Bobb are all out of today’s match. Although the trio have trained this week, which is good news for Pep Guardiola’s side.
Erling Haaland could return to the starting lineup for today’s match. He has trained all week, and Pep Guardiola informed the media yesterday that a decision on whether or not Haaland would start was yet to be made.
Ederson: I’d be surprised if Ederson didn’t start in goal today. I can’t see any reason for him not to start today’s match.
Matheus Nunes: Nunes has become City’s first-choice right-back of late and should start today.
Ruben Dias: The leadership Dias provides has been crucial to City’s recent upturn in fortunes. He should start today.
Josko Gvardiol: I’m hoping that Gvardiol stays at centre-back. He’s been in superb form recently.
Nico O’Reilly: O’Reilly wasn’t at his best against Wolves. But the game was a lesson for him and he should start at left-back.
Mateo Kovacic: The Croatian international has been in good form of late. That should see him start today at St. Mary’s.
Bernardo Silva: Bernardo has been brilliant in Manchester City’s previous matches. He’ll have an important role to play today against Southampton.
Ilkay Gundogan: Another player who has just done his job throughout Manchester City’s recent run. I expect him to start.
Kevin De Bruyne: De Bruyne is playing with a point to prove and he could have a crucial role to play against Southampton.
Omar Marmoush: I’m hoping to see the Marmoush/Haaland partnership continue today. The intelligence and runs Marmoush provides could help unlock Southampton’s defence today.
Erling Haaland: After training for a week Haaland should raring to go for today’s match. I’m expecting him to start and be up for the game.
