Manchester United are reportedly holding new rounds of talks with Atalanta over a deal to land Ederson this summer.

Manuel Ugarte has come under scrutiny for his recent performances in the middle of the park under Ruben Amorim. The Uruguayan’s lacklustre handling of the ball led to West Ham United’s second goal in United’s 2-0 defeat at home over the weekend.

Signed from Paris Saint-Germain for an initial fee of £42 million last summer, Ugarte has often divided opinion at Old Trafford.

The 24-year-old has mostly looked sharp out of possession and regularly dispossesses players in the final third, but he isn’t very composed with the ball at his feet.

Ugarte’s limited skill set and Casemiro’s ageing legs should convince Amorim to sign a new midfielder ahead of new season.

Interestingly, a report in Italy suggests United have renewed their efforts to sign Ederson.

According to journalist Alfredo Pedullà, United have established new contacts with Atalanta for Ederson.

Before finalising the agreement to sign Ugarte from PSG, the Red Devils reportedly saw their £42m bid turned down by the Serie A outfit for their Brazilian dynamo.

Pedullà claims that the Premier League giants will have to improve their offer this summer to convince Atalanta to part ways with the 25-year-old, whose contract in Bergamo is valid until 2027.

Ederson could prove to be a brilliant signing for Amorim. He has the athleticism and tactical awareness to shield United’s backline as well as technical ability to progress the play from deep.

Meanwhile, Ederson’s fellow countryman Casemiro has enjoyed a resurgence in form in Manchester. After initially struggling to break into Amorim’s starting lineup, the veteran midfielder has become a crucial part of the United head coach’s system.

New Brazil boss Carlo Ancelotti has taken note of his form and is prepared to recall the ex-Real Madrid star. It would be interesting to see him partner Ederson in midfield at the international level.
