Manchester United look set to finalise another incoming under the INEOS stewardship with Marc Armstrong set to become the club’s chief business officer.
The Athletic have revealed that the Red Devils have finally got their man after months of negotiations with Paris Saint-Germain, where Armstrong was chief revenue officer.
A start date has been agreed between both parties and it is slated to be sometime this week. He is not the first capture from the Ligue 1 club with United already roping in former PSG executive Jean-Claude Blanc earlier.
“Manchester United are set to appoint Marc Armstrong as the club’s chief business officer after concluding lengthy negotiations with Paris Saint-Germain, where Armstrong was the club’s chief revenue officer.”
This update comes amid INEOS’ cost-cutting measures with Sir Jim Ratcliffe claiming these as necessary steps to avoid the club going bust.
And Armstrong will have a huge role to play to help with the club’s finances with the new co-owners intent on improving the club’s revenue stream ahead of a crucial summer window.
His proven track record at PSG was what attracted INEOS with Armstrong credited with the Parisian club’s improved revenues since 2022.
Armstrong will work closely with CEO Omar Berrada, who oversees both the club’s commercial and football side.
“Armstrong has successfully been directing PSG’s financial strategy since 2022 and is considered a top-level commercial operator. He will work under CEO Omar Berrada, who oversees the commercial and football side of Manchester United.
“United see Armstrong as having a proven track record in running day-to-day commercial activity and this will be his role. United are cutting costs, but they need to increase revenues.”
News had broken late last year that Armstrong would be stepping down from his role. His exit is reportedly due to personal reasons and PSG have been reportedly aware of his plans for several weeks.
Armstrong has previous experience of being the head of business development at the Football Association until 2007, following which he moved to TEAM marketing, working closely with UEFA in Switzerland.
Not only football, he has also worked in the basketball world, working as vice-president of marketing partnerships for the NBA back in 2012.
Despite INEOS’ intentions behind the move, fans might not be too enthused given the frequent job cuts.
Lots of families in Manchester are getting affected and bringing in someone who will earn top dollar while removing low-earning employees might not be the best look for the co-owners especially with fan protests just around the corner.
