Man Utd Join Race for Espanyol Keeper Joan Garcia

Manchester United are now serious contenders to sign Joan Garcia from Espanyol, setting up a head-to-head battle with Arsenal for one of La Liga’s most promising young goalkeepers. As FootballTransfers first reported, the 23-year-old is firmly on United’s radar amid growing concerns about Andre Onana’s inconsistency.

Arsenal’s Longstanding Interest

Arsenal’s pursuit of Garcia dates back to last summer. The Gunners reportedly made a €20 million bid for the Spanish shot-stopper as they prepared to part ways with Aaron Ramsdale, who eventually joined Southampton. Though that transfer didn’t materialise, the club have remained keen on Garcia as a long-term option.

According to FootballTransfers, “personal terms are fully agreed between Garcia and Arsenal,” showing how far along negotiations had progressed. Espanyol initially demanded Garcia’s €30 million release clause, but the Catalan club are now showing flexibility and may accept a lower fee.

United’s Move Sparks Transfer Battle

However, Manchester United are ready to hijack the move. “Club sources revealed that United have identified Garcia as a potential replacement for Andre Onana, whose form has been under increasing scrutiny,” reports FootballTransfers.

Onana’s erratic form, including costly errors in the recent 2-2 draw against Lyon, has placed pressure on manager Ruben Amorim to consider alternatives. United’s intention is not simply to compete for Garcia, but to leapfrog Arsenal by offering a higher bid and the promise of first-team football – something Arsenal cannot guarantee.

Garcia’s Strengths Fit Premier League Needs

Garcia’s profile has drawn the attention of both English giants for good reason. He has earned praise in La Liga for his “composure, sharp reflexes, and ball-playing ability” – attributes that suit both Arsenal’s and United’s evolving tactical demands.

While Arsenal view Garcia as a project with long-term upside, United see him as a more immediate solution. The allure of being a potential number one from the outset could heavily influence Garcia’s decision.

Amorim’s Influence and Keeper Shake-up

Since taking charge at United in November, Ruben Amorim has faced multiple dilemmas in the goalkeeper department. Onana, though talented, has not lived up to his billing since arriving for £47 million from Inter. Garcia could represent the beginning of a reshaped backline, with Amorim reportedly keen to rebuild from the back.

As FootballTransfers reported, “United are willing to outbid Arsenal’s original offer, which could sway both Espanyol and the player.” With negotiations heating up, the next few weeks could prove pivotal in Garcia’s future.

For Manchester United, this move makes a lot of sense. Onana, while capable of brilliance, has made too many unforced errors – particularly in high-pressure European fixtures. The Lyon game summed up a season of inconsistency, and fans have grown weary of wondering which version of the Cameroonian will show up.

Joan Garcia offers something different: hunger, composure, and the potential to grow under pressure. At just 23, he’s a modern goalkeeper comfortable with the ball at his feet – a key attribute in Amorim’s tactical setup. Unlike Arsenal, who would keep him as a backup, United can offer him an immediate step into the Premier League spotlight. That’s hard to ignore.

This could be a statement signing. If Garcia proves capable of handling the rigours of English football, United could finally stabilise a position that has caused more anxiety than assurance. Outbidding Arsenal and beating them to a top target would also send a message: United are rebuilding with purpose.
