Maresca responds to question about Borussia Dortmund bid for midfielder | OneFootball

Chelsea smashed Morecambe in the FA Cup today, but after the game there was as much talk about the players not playing as those who had featured in the stroll to victory.

One name not featured in the squad at all was Carney Chukwuemeka, who has struggled to play at all this season and has been strongly linked with moves away this month.

Rumours specifically about Borussia Dortmund apparently making a bid were put to Enzo Maresca in the press conference, and he denied all knowledge of such an event:

“No. I don’t know, to be honest. I don’t think so,” the manager said.

But Maresca always plays dumb in these situations, pretending he’s totally out of the loop in terms of transfers. We’re sure he isn’t as plugged in as the sporting directors, especially in the build up to a match day, but he’d surely know about a bid for a first team player.

What he does know for sure is who is at least likely to leave from his squad – hence Chukwuemeka, Cesare Casadei and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall all missing out on the squad today. We’d be surprised if they all left this month, but we’d be even more surprised if they were all still here come February.

Maresca also had the chance to praise Tosin, another first team irregular who scored twice:

“Yeah, it’s a bit the picture of the game in terms of he was, most of the time, the only one with more space. They were marking man-to-man inside of the box and there was no space. He was the only one who could carry the ball and try that option. We are happy for him,” the manager commented.
