Matheus Cunha was full of admiration for his soon-to-be manager after agreeing a five-year deal with Manchester United.
The Wolverhampton Wanderers talisman is poised to become United’s first arrival of the summer following a breakthrough in negotiations with both clubs during talks on Tuesday.
As a result, Wolves have given Cunha the green light to travel to Manchester and undergo his medical, with hopes the deal can be finalised by the time the window opens this Sunday, June 1 — as confirmed by David Ornstein.
Cunha’s £62.5 million release clause will be paid in instalments over the next two years, while United, who aimed to pay over five years as opposed to the two agreed, will also fork out an initial ‘lump sum’.
The 13-capped Brazilian international had set his sights on a move to Old Trafford in recent months, despite interest from Arsenal and Nottingham Forest, both of whom secured Champions League and Conference League spots respectively, in January.
On deadline day, he put pen to paper on a four-and-a-half-year extension, although he seemingly only did so to allow for a more seamless summer departure.

Throughout 2024/2025 in the Premier League, Cunha notched a hugely impressive 15 goals and six assists. He was integral to Wolves retaining their top-flight status after a turbulent start to the campaign before they ultimately ended up finishing level on points with United.
The 26-year-old has previously played for RB Leipzig, Hertha Berlin, and Atletico Madrid. His most notable performances came in England, which is certainly a feat in itself, given how often players struggle to adapt to the Premier League.
After Wolves’ final game of the campaign – a 1-1 draw with Brentford – on Sunday, Cunha spoke with CNN Portugal and was unsurprisingly pressed on what he thought of Ruben Amorim.
“Talking about him is easy. I think he’s a great coach and I wish him nothing but the best, I hope he conquers the world as he did Portugal,” said Cunha, as cited by the Daily Mail.
Further asked whether the pair could ‘Conquer the world together at Manchester United’, he responded: “Well, God willing, we’ll always do our best to help.”
