In his latest Sky Germany column, former Bayern Munich legend Lothar Matthaus believes Harry Kane’s comments towards referee Bastian Dankert were ‘unjustified’.

Kane, who came into Saturday’s 3-0 win over Mainz only one yellow card away from suspension, picked up his fifth booking of the season.

The English talisman, who could miss the on-field title celebrations against RB Leipzig next weekend, accused the German arbiter of attention-seeking after the game.

Matthaus, on the other hand feels the rules are in place in the Bundesliga for a reason and they apply to Harry Kane too.

“One can discuss whether Dankert should have shown more sensitivity, but in other games too there were yellows for delaying the game too,” Matthaus explained.

In his post-match interview, Kane expressed his desire that the Bundesliga might one day utilise the English Premier League’s methods of punishment.

“Kane plays in Germany and we have bigger problems in the Bundesliga than adopting a [discipline] system from England.

“We have to be satisfied with our system, and we also have to protect our referees,” Matthaus added.

Should the Bavarians draw or win against Leipzig next Saturday afternoon, the 31-year-old Kane will be celebrating from the stands.
