Mauricio Pochettino believes his his exit from Chelsea last year was the “best decision” for all involved.

The former Spurs boss left Stamford Bridge after just one year in charge having led the Blues to a sixth-placed finish in the Premier League, as well as the League Cup final and the last four of the FA Cup.

After initially struggling in the first half of last season, Chelsea looked more fluid as the campaign wore on. Surprisingly, however, Pochettino left at the end of the season following a “mutual decision to part ways”.

In an interview with Sky Sports this week, the Argentine says there are no hard feelings about his departure.

“Always when something doesn’t work it’s better to stop and to look at different things and I think it was the best decision for both sides,” he explained.

“I think both sides were happy to split and then to be open to see different options, and different options appear.”

Pochettino was expected to take up another job in club football and was even linked with England after Gareth Southgate resigned last year. He instead decided to accepted a different international role, becoming the head coach for the US men’s team.

The 53-year-old said the chance to take over the host nation of a World Cup was too good an offer to turn down.

“Maybe it’s not easy for the people to understand why,” he said.

“Being the national coach of the USA with the World Cup in 2026, for a coaching staff like us after many years working in clubs, it was a great opportunity to challenge ourselves.

“When the offer arrived, it was easy to say ‘yes’.”
